Surfing Skin Care: Wax Rash, Reef Cuts, Sun and Salt
Surfing · Skin is gear

Wax rash on the chest. Salt in the cuts. Sun on everything.

Three hours in the water and the board rubs the chest and thighs raw, the reef finds an ankle, and sun and salt dry out every inch they reach. Here is the surf kit: what goes on before the paddle out, and what goes on in the parking lot after.

Skin is gear
Why surfers' skin cracks

Salt water pulls the water out.

Ocean water is saltier than skin, so hours in it draw moisture out, and the sun and wind finish the job once you're back on the sand. The board adds friction: wax and fiberglass rub the chest, ribs and inner thighs on every paddle and every pop-up. Reef and rocks add the cuts that never seem to close because they go back in the salt every morning.

Cover what rubs with a rashguard. Clean every cut before the next session. Put water back into the skin after, every time. The Zen Rhino rashguard was built for the lineup as much as for the mat.

A surf day, hour by hour

From dawn patrol to the parking lot.

Where surfers' skin goes wrong over a day, and what goes on at each stop.

Dawn patrol · 6 AMCover what rubs.

Rashguard on for long sessions: UPF 50 and no wax rash on the chest. Zinc on the lips before you paddle out.

The session · 8 AMSun, salt, friction.

Three hours of reflected sun. The rashguard and the zinc do the work, so there's nothing to reapply in the lineup.

The reef · 9 AMClean it first.

Rinse a reef cut with fresh water as soon as you're out. Cleanse spray on it in the parking lot.

Parking lot · 10 AMPut the water back.

Hydrate on the face, shoulders and hands. Aloe and hyaluronic acid in a mist, nothing to rub into sunburn.

That night · 9 PMClose the rash.

Split+ whipped balm on wax rash and cuts. Massage Cream on the shoulders and lower back after a long paddle.
