Pickleball · Skin is gear

Nobody plays one game.

You play until somebody has to leave. By game four the paddle hand is damp, the grip slipped once on a put-away you had, and there's a hot spot cooking at the base of your thumb.

Skin is gear
Where this started

The same side, a few thousand times a week.

Pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in the country and it has a hands problem nobody talks about. The paddle hand sweats, the grip slips, a callus builds at the base of the thumb and catches, and the elbow and shoulder take every rep on the same side. Climbers have dealt with all of that for decades. The fix transfers.

Dry hands the night before so the grip holds through game four, not just game one. File the calluses flat so they can't tear. Tape the hot spot you already know about. Work the elbow and shoulder tonight so tomorrow's ladder isn't a rest day you didn't ask for. Grip, protect, recover.

Game 1 · Warm-upFile it flat.

The callus at the base of the thumb shouldn't have an edge. Ten strokes with the file before you walk on.

Game 2 · Open playTape the hot spot.

You know where it is. Tape it before it's a blister, not after.

Game 4 · Still goingKeep the grip.

Hydrate the hand if it's gone glassy in the sun. Zinc on the lips. The sun hoodie for the outdoor courts.

Massage Cream on the forearm and shoulder. Cups for the stubborn knot. The ring for a hand that squeezed a paddle for four hours.

“Great product, not just for dry skin but for dry joints. Love using this on my shoulders and knees after the shower, it really helps with joint pain.”
