Warehouse and delivery · Skin is gear

A thousand boxes a shift. The cardboard drinks the water right out of your hands.

Warehouse and delivery work runs on cardboard, tape guns, box cutters and concrete. The boxes pull moisture from the skin until the thumbs and fingertips split, and ten hours on a concrete floor works on the feet and back. Here is the routine that fits a shift.

Skin is gear
Why cardboard cracks hands

Cardboard is made to soak things up.

Cardboard is paper fiber, and paper wicks oil and water out of whatever touches it. Handle enough boxes and the skin on the thumbs and fingertips dries out, stiffens and splits at the corners. Gloves help with the friction and trap sweat. Box cutters and tape guns build calluses that catch. Underneath it all, ten hours of standing and walking on concrete wears on the feet, knees and back.

The routine fits in a break. Repair after you wash up, before the gloves go back on. The Split stick in a pocket for the crack that opens mid-shift. Split+ overnight. Performance on the feet the night before, Massage Cream on the feet and back after. For the people moving everything everyone else ordered.
