BJJ Mat Burn and Jiu-Jitsu Skin Care
Jiu-jitsu · Skin is gear

Mat burn on the knees. Gi burn on the neck. Dry skin everywhere.

Six rolls a night on a textured mat with a rough cotton gi strips skin faster than most sports. Add a hot room and a shower you cannot always get to. This is how grapplers keep skin intact, clean, and ready for the next class.

Why the mat wins

Friction, heat, and a rough gi.

Tatami-textured mats grip feet, which is the point, and strip knees, elbows and the tops of toes, which is the cost. A gi collar drags across the neck on every choke defense. Sweat softens skin and the mat takes it. New grapplers burn worst because they drag; experienced ones move cleaner but roll more.

The routine that works is short. Wash the mat off before you leave the gym. Cover the raw spots so they close instead of reopening at the next class. Keep the rest of the skin hydrated so it bends instead of tearing. Rhino's grappling kit was built with Chey Bowers, who trains and fights for a living.

A class night, hour by hour

From the gi bag to bed.

Where grapplers' skin goes wrong on a training night, and what goes on at each stop.

Before class · 5 PMCover the known spots.

Tape toes and any raw spot from last night. Performance on the feet so the base stays planted on a sweaty mat.

Rolling · 6 PMKeep the skin between you and the mat.

Rashguard under the gi or for no-gi. Less gi burn, less mat burn, less shared skin.

Mat exit · 7:30 PMWash before you leave.

Castile wash in the gym shower. No shower? Cleanse spray on the arms, neck, feet and gear before the car.

Home · 9 PMClose the burns.

Split+ whipped balm on mat burn, gi burn and cracked knuckles. Repair on everything else.

Bed · 10 PMBuy tomorrow's class.

Massage Cream on neck, forearms and grip-wrecked hands. Finger ring for the fingers the gi chewed.
