Mountain Bike Hand Blisters: Dry Palms, Planted Grips
Mountain bike · Skin is gear

Hot spot on lap two. Blister by lap four.

Palms go slick inside the gloves, the grip starts to swim, and the skin at the base of the fingers rubs raw. Riders lose more days to hands than to legs. Here is how to keep palms dry, gloves planted, and the blister from ever forming.

Skin is gear
Why palms blister

Sweat first. Friction second.

A dry palm in a glove does not blister. A wet one does. Sweat softens the top layer of skin, the glove shears across it on every brake pull and every chunky section, and a hot spot turns into a blister in a lap. Lock-on grips and better gloves changed everything except the moisture inside the glove.

Rhino was built for climbers' hands and the same crew rode after work in Bend. They noticed the night-before sweat cream that kept chalk on the rock kept gloves on the bars. Dry palms are the whole trick. Everything else here is for after.

A ride day, hour by hour

From the coffee to the beer.

Where hands go wrong during a ride, and what goes on at each stop.

The night before · 9 PMDry palms show up dry.

Performance on the palms before bed. No aluminum. Tomorrow the gloves stay planted and the hot spots do not start.

If a thumb web or finger base always rubs, tape it now. Sun hoodie on at the car, zinc on the lips.

Mid-ride · 11 AMGrip where it counts.

Dry palms inside the gloves, less death-grip, more control when it gets rowdy.

The truck · 2 PMDeal with the skin.

Clean it. Split on any raw spot or trail rash. Repair on chapped knuckles and the backs of the hands.

That night · 8 PMBuy tomorrow's lap.

Massage Cream on forearms, quads, calves. Ten minutes on the roller. Cups for the knot that will not quit.
