Red River Gorge · Skin is gear

Steep sandstone, humid air, and forearms that give out before the skin does.

The Red is pockets, jugs and overhanging Corbin sandstone, climbed in Kentucky humidity that makes chalk paste by the second burn. Skin goes soft, hands go greasy, and the pump arrives early. Here is how to show up ready for a week at the Red and climb through it.

The place

Steep, sandy, and famous for the pump.

The Red River Gorge is a few hundred square miles of Corbin sandstone cliffs in the Daniel Boone National Forest, overhanging and pocketed, with more steep sport routes than anywhere east of the Rockies. The rock is soft enough that a wet day closes the crags and rough enough that a week of jugs rubs the pads raw. The air holds water most of the year, so chalk turns to paste and hands that would be dry in the desert run greasy here.

The Red was almost lost to private sale in the 2000s. The Red River Gorge Climbers' Coalition bought the Pendergrass-Murray Recreational Preserve and other land so the crags stayed open, and Rhino gives one percent of sales to them and the other coalitions that do that work. The kit below is built for humid rock and long, pumpy routes, by people who have driven a long way to fall off the fourth bolt.

A Red trip, day by day

From the drive down to the drive home.

Where skin and forearms go wrong on a Red River Gorge trip, and what goes on at each stop.

The night before · 9 PMDry hands for humid rock.

Performance on the palms and fingers every night of the trip. In Red humidity, this is the difference between grip and grease.

Day one · Muir ValleyLess chalk, more brush.

Thin chalk, brush the pocket. Greasy hands plus thick chalk is paste. Hydrate only if the tips go glassy, which they rarely do here.

The pump · Fourth boltBuy the next burn.

Massage Cream on the forearms between burns, finger ring on the belay. Shake it out and go again.

Camp · Miguel'sClose what the jugs opened.

Soft, wet skin rubs raw on jugs. Split on the raw pads, Repair on the rest. Tape anything that is going to rub tomorrow.

Rain day · RestStay off the wet rock, fix the hands.

Sandstone is fragile when wet. Rest, Split+ on anything raw, Massage Cream and the roller on forearms and shoulders.

Drive home · SundayCome back thicker.

Tip Juice on the rest days before the next trip so the pads hold up to a week of pockets.
