Sailing · Skin is gear

Sheets through the palms. Salt in the cracks. Sun on every inch.

A day on the boat means wet lines running through the hands, winch handles, salt spray drying on the skin, and sun reflecting off every surface. Sailors' hands crack and burn in a way they don't on land. Here is the sailor's kit, from the dock to the anchorage.

Skin is gear
Why sailors' hands crack

Salt, friction and sun, all at once.

A sheet running out under load burns skin in an instant, and a day of trimming and grinding wears the palms the slow way. Salt spray dries on the hands and pulls water out of them; wind finishes the job. Knuckles crack, fingertips split, and the sun coming off the water burns the backs of the hands, the neck and the lips faster than you notice.

Gloves for the heavy lines, sun coverage once in the morning, and a nightly routine at anchor that puts the water back and closes the cracks. Rhino started with climbers. The rope burns are the same.
