Tennis · Skin is gear

Overgrip soaked by the second set. Blister on the heel of the hand by the third.

Humidity, a two-hour match and a racket that never leaves the hand. The grip goes slick, the wrist tightens, and the skin at the base of the thumb rubs raw. Here is how racket players keep the handle dry, stop the blister, and keep the elbow in the game.

Skin is gear
Why the handle gets away

Overgrips absorb sweat. They do not stop it.

A player goes through overgrips because the hand keeps sweating into them. By the second set the tack is gone, the grip tightens to compensate, and the forearm pays for it at the elbow. Pickleball, squash, padel and racquetball all have the same hand on the same kind of handle for the same length of time.

The blister is the same story. Wet skin at the heel of the hand shears against the grip on every serve until it lifts. Dry hands the night before keep the overgrip tacky longer and the grip pressure lighter. Tape the spot that always goes. Deal with the elbow before it is a season-ender. Rhino's sweat cream was built for climbers. A racket handle is a hold you never let go of.
