Arm Pump MTB: Downhill and Bike Park Forearm Recovery
Downhill and bike park · Skin is gear

Halfway down the run, your forearms stop taking orders.

Braking bumps, death grip, five minutes of chatter with nowhere to shake out. Arm pump turns a good line into survival mode. Here is what helps the forearms recover between laps, keeps the grips planted, and keeps the palms in one piece for a full bike park day.

What arm pump is

A muscle that can't let go.

Arm pump is forearm muscle filling with blood faster than it can drain, inside a sheath that doesn't stretch. Long descents never give the hands a chance to open, and braking bumps make you squeeze harder every turn. Wet palms make it worse: a grip that slides gets squeezed harder still.

Dry palms let you ride with a lighter grip. A warm, worked forearm on the lift drains faster than a cold one. Ten minutes with a roller after the last lap means tomorrow starts with arms instead of stones. Same kit our moto riders use, scaled for the bike park.

A park day, lap by lap

From the night before to the last chair.

Where forearms and hands go wrong on a downhill day, and what goes on at each stop.

The night before · 9 PMDry palms, lighter grip.

Performance on the palms before bed. The gloves stay planted tomorrow and you squeeze less on every brake.

First lift · 9 AMWarm the forearms.

Massage Cream on the forearms before the first run. Warm muscle drains faster than cold.

On the lift · 11 AMOpen the hands.

Shake out, stretch the fingers, finger ring on each one. The lift ride is your only recovery window.

Lunch · 1 PMDeal with the hot spots.

Tape the thumb web or palm that's starting to rub. Split on anything that's opened.

Last chair · 5 PMBuy tomorrow's arms.

Massage Cream, roller and cups on the forearms. Repair on the hands. Split+ whipped balm on any road rash.
