Bouldering Skin Care: Flappers, Calluses and Tips That Last
Bouldering · Skin is gear

Five moves. Two flappers. Session over.

Boulderers burn through skin faster than anyone on rock. Every attempt is a max effort on the same four holds, and the pads only catch the fall. This is how to show up with thick tips, keep them through the session, and close what opens up before the next one.

Why bouldering is different

Same holds, forty times.

A route climber spreads a day of climbing across a few hundred different holds. A boulderer puts forty tries into the same crimp, and the skin under that crimp knows it. Friction and heat build in one spot until the top layer lifts, and a callus that was protecting you becomes the thing that tears.

The fix is not softer skin or harder skin. It is skin with water in it, filed flat so nothing catches, toughened before the trip so the first day does not take the top layer off. Rhino came out of Central Oregon, where the boulders are sharp welded tuff and the air is dry enough to crack a knuckle on the walk in. The kit below is what our boulderers pack, in the order they use it.

Grade your tips. Then fix them.

Where boulderers' skin lives on a hard day, and what goes on at each level.

  1. V0Fresh
    Soft, pink, thin.

First trip of the season or back from a rest week. Two weeks of Tip Juice before the trip, so day one does not take the top layer off.

  2. V3Working
    Calluses building, edges lifting.

The good phase. File every morning so the calluses stay flat and do not roll into flappers on the crimp.

  3. V5Glassy
    Shiny tips, no friction.

Dry air, chalk, long session. Dry skin skates off slopers and splits on edges. Hydrate between tries, Repair that night.

  4. V7Greasy
    Sweating off the hold.

Warm rock, hard crux, nervous hands. Performance the night before, less chalk, brush the hold instead of chalking it.

  5. V9Split
    A crack across the pad.

Glue and tape to finish the session. File the rim flat tonight. Split overnight, two or three nights.

  6. V11Flapper
A callus let go and took skin with it.

Trim it flat, glue the edge, tape, keep climbing if you must. Split+ whipped balm overnight, Tip Juice on rest days until it is back to V3.

We make everything in our own facility in Redmond, Oregon, twenty minutes from Smith Rock, on 100% on-site solar. The tuff out there is sharp, and the people bouldering on it were our first customers.
