Enduro and Hard Enduro: Clutch Hand, Mud and Scrapes
Enduro and hard enduro · Skin is gear

Logs, rocks, mud and a clutch hand that gave up an hour ago.

Enduro is hours of technical riding where the clutch does as much work as the throttle. Wet gloves, slipping on logs, picking the bike up for the tenth time. The hands blister, the forearms burn, and the shins and knees take the rocks. Here is the enduro kit, from the start line to the wash bay.

Skin is gear
Why enduro eats hands

Feathering the clutch for four hours.

Hard enduro rides at walking pace through terrain that fights back. The clutch gets slipped and feathered constantly, so two fingers and the web of the left hand take the abuse. Creek crossings and mud soak the gloves, and soaked skin blisters fast. Every get-off and every bike pick-up loads the back and shoulders, and the shins and knees take the rocks.

The routine is about getting through a long day and riding again tomorrow. Dry Spray on the hands and feet the night before, so the tape on the clutch fingers stays put. Clean the mud out of every cut as soon as you can, because dirt in an open wound is what turns a scrape into a problem. Close it all at night. The terrain wins sometimes. Your skin doesn't have to.

An enduro day, section by section

From the start line to the wash bay.

Where enduro riders' hands and bodies go wrong over a long day, and what goes on at each stop.

The night before · 9 PMDry hands, dry boots.

Dry Spray on the palms, fingers, feet and wherever the braces sit. Wet sections still soak the gear, but less sweat keeps the tape on longer.

Start line · 7 AMTape the clutch hand.

Tape the clutch fingers and thumb web, and the throttle hand where it always rubs.

The rock garden · 11 AMThe hot spot.

Gloves off at the check, dry them, Split stick on anything open, retape.

The wash bay · 4 PMCool down, clean up.

Cleanse spray on every scrape and on the gloves, braces and boot liners. Castile wash for the mud.

That night · 9 PMBody work.

Massage Cream and Repair on the forearms, back and shoulders, then the roller. Split+ whipped balm on blisters and scrapes.
