Motocross and Dirt Bike Hand Blisters
Motocross and dirt bike · Skin is gear

Two motos in, the palms are hamburger.

Thin MX gloves, a sweaty grip and a bar that never stops moving. The throttle hand blisters at the base of the fingers, the clutch hand at the web, and calluses tear in the second moto. Here is how riders keep their hands in one piece from the first practice to the last checkered flag.

Skin is gear
Why riders blister

A wet glove on a moving grip.

Every whoop, every braking bump and every blip of the throttle twists the grip inside your palm. MX gloves are thin on purpose, so the skin takes the friction. Sweat softens it, and soft skin rubs open fast. The throttle hand goes at the base of the fingers where it rolls the grip; the clutch hand goes at the web of the thumb. Calluses build, stand up, and tear on the hard days.

Most of the fix is boring and works. Dry Spray on the hands and feet the night before, so the gloves and boots stay drier and the tape stays put. Calluses filed flat so they can't catch. Tape on the spots you already know. Gloves that fit, and grips that aren't worn bald. And the same night, close whatever opened so you can ride tomorrow. Every rider has a blister story. Fewer is the goal.

A race day, moto by moto

From the night before to the trailer.

Where riders' hands go wrong over a race day, and what goes on at each stop.

The night before · 9 PMDry hands, dry boots.

Dry Spray on the palms, fingers and feet before bed. Less sweat in the gloves and boots, and the tape stays where you put it.

Sign-up · 7 AMFile and tape.

File any callus that stands up. Tape the base of the fingers on the throttle hand and the thumb web on the clutch side.

Practice · 9 AMThe first hot spot.

Gloves off between sessions so the hands can dry. Retape anything that rubbed. Split stick on anything that opened.

Between motos · 1 PMCool down, reset.

Cleanse spray on the hands, face and neck, and inside the gloves. Pocket Water. The finger ring on stiff fingers.

The trailer · 6 PMBody work, then close it.

Massage Cream and Repair worked into the forearms, shoulders and legs. Split+ whipped balm on torn calluses, left on overnight.
