Skin is gear
Hard plastic, soft skin, a lot of movement.
A knee brace has to sit tight to work, and every time the knee bends, the straps and hinge pads slide a little against the skin. Over a day of riding, that turns the back of the knee and the calf raw. Boots do the same at the shin and ankle, and a foot sweating in a closed boot for hours softens the skin until it blisters.
Riders who stay comfortable do a few things. They wear brace sleeves or long socks between the brace and the skin. They keep feet and legs drier with Dry Spray the night before, which also keeps the tape where they put it. And they treat brace rash like any other abrasion: clean it and close it the same night, so it doesn't get worse every weekend. The armor stays. The rash doesn't have to.
