Skiing: Cracked Hands and Ski Boot Blisters
Skiing · Skin is gear

Cracked knuckles by Christmas. Boot blisters by New Year's.

Cold air holds almost no water, and the lodge is drier than the mountain. Hands split at the knuckles, heels rub raw in a stiff boot, and the quads quit on the last run. This is the cold-weather kit, from the parking lot to the hot tub.

Skin is gear
Why February cracks skin

Altitude, cold, and a heated lodge.

At twenty degrees the air can hold a fraction of the water it holds in summer. Heat that air indoors and the humidity drops further. Skin gives up its water to the room, loses its stretch, and splits at the places that bend most: knuckles, fingertips, the corners of the thumb.

Feet have the opposite problem. A boot is a sealed box, the foot sweats into the liner all day, and wet skin shears against a hard shell. The answer is the same one we give climbers: keep the hands hydrated and the feet dry. Rhino is made twenty minutes from Mt. Bachelor. We have had a long time to work this out.

A ski day, hour by hour

From first chair to the hot tub.

Where skin and legs go wrong on a cold day, and what goes on at each stop.

The night before · 9 PMDry feet start dry.

Performance on the soles and heels before bed. Liners stay drier, heels stop sliding, blisters do not start.

Parking lot · 8 AMCover what the wind will find.

Zinc on the lips, Repair on the knuckles and face before the gloves and buff go on.

Lift line · 11 AMFix the split before it opens.

Split stick in the jacket pocket. A knuckle that starts to crack gets covered on the chair, not at the car.

The lodge · 1 PMHands out of the gloves.

Hydrate on anything tight or glassy. Tape a heel that is talking before the afternoon.

That night · 8 PMBuy tomorrow's legs.

Massage Cream on quads and calves. Split+ whipped balm on cracked heels and knuckles. Repair everywhere else.
