Snowboarding Skin Care: Cracked Hands, Windburn, Sore Wrists
Snowboarding · Skin is gear

Wrists from the falls. Knuckles from the wind. Feet from the boots.

Snowboarders spend more time with their hands on the snow than anyone on the hill: strapping in, sitting down, catching edges. Cold, dry air cracks the knuckles, the wind burns the face, and the wrists and knees take the falls. This is the snowboard kit, from the lift line to the lodge.

Skin is gear
Why boarders crack

Hands on the snow, all day.

Every lap starts with sitting down and strapping in, usually with the gloves off. Bare hands in cold, dry air and wet snow crack at the knuckles by the second day of a trip. Falls go onto the wrists and the knees. Soft boots sweat, and the feet go cold and wet by noon.

The fix is three habits. Repair on the hands and face before you go out, so the wind has less to pull from. Performance on the feet the night before, so the boots stay drier. Massage Cream on the wrists, knees and quads after the last chair. Rhino is made twenty minutes from Mt. Bachelor, where the wind always knows where your gloves are.
